Your Essential Guide to Protect Your Hair In the Heat

16 Apr 2024

When it comes to braving the scorching temperatures of Dubai, protecting your hair should be at the top of your to-do list. Yes, we feel you. Knowing where to start can be daunting. The intense heat can wreak havoc on your locks, leaving them feeling dry, brittle and prone to damage. With a few simple tricks and a bit of TLC, you can keep your hair looking fabulous, even in the sweltering Dubai heat.
Just like your body, your hair needs hydration to thrive in the desert climate of Dubai. Start by investing in a quality shampoo and conditioner to replenish lost moisture and keep your locks looking healthy and luscious. This may not be relevant to all, but for those who have particularly dry and damaged hair, keep an eye out for products infused with hydrating ingredients like argan oil, coconut oil or shea butter — to nourish and protect your hair from dehydration.
We caught up with salon owner, Shola Dupigny at Beauty Box to give us her tips on how to protect your hair in the summer heat. Here are her four tips that you should add to your summer hair care regime. We are taking note.

Stay hydrated from the inside out

It is important to keep your body and hair hydrated from the inside out, as dehydrated hair is more prone to damage from the sun. Don't forget to hydrate from the inside out by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Staying hydrated helps to keep your scalp and hair follicles healthy and promotes overall hair growth and vitality. Aim to drink at least the recommended 3 litres of water a day to keep your hair and body hydrated, healthy and happy in the Dubai heat.
Treat your hair to a refreshing rinse with cool water. This helps to close the hair cuticle, seal in moisture, and add shine to your locks. Avoid very hot showers, as they can strip your hair of its natural oils and exacerbate dryness. Instead, opt for lukewarm or cool water to keep your hair looking and feeling its best.

Reduce the use of heated tools

As tempting as it may be to blow-dry, straighten, or curl your hair, excessive heat styling can strip your strands of moisture and lead to damage and breakage. Embrace your natural texture and give your hair a break from heat styling whenever possible. If you must use heat tools, be sure to apply a heat protectant spray beforehand to minimise damage and always use the lowest heat setting possible. Try to air-dry your hair when possible, and opt for protective hairstyles that keep your hair off your face and neck, reducing exposure to heat and humidity. Braids, buns, and ponytails are great options for keeping your hair out of harm's way while still looking stylish and chic. Plus, they can help minimise frizz and keep your hair looking neat and tidy throughout the day.

Deep condition regularly

Pamper your hair with regular deep conditioning treatments to replenish moisture, repair damage, and restore shine. Choose a hydrating hair mask or treatment enriched with nourishing oils and vitamins to give your locks a much-needed boost of hydration. Incorporate deep conditioning into your weekly hair care routine to keep your hair healthy, hydrated and resilient in the face of the Dubai heat.
