Essential Tips To Maintain Your Watch

9 Mar 2025

Watches aren’t just there to remind you you are late again — they are miniature marvels of engineering, a key part of your personal style, and sometimes even treasured keepsakes. Whether you have got a luxurious chronograph, a sleek quartz model, or a vintage piece that has been running longer than your to-do list from last year, they deserve a bit of tender loving care to keep them ticking (and looking) sharp. The good news? You don’t need a degree in horology — just a few simple habits. Here is how to keep it in top shape.

Daily care

Every timepiece is a finely-tuned mechanism, so to keep it running smoothly for longer, it is best to protect it from anything that could get inside.
First off, keep it away from moisture — unless, of course, it is built for deep-sea diving. Steam, humidity, and sudden temperature changes can lead to condensation inside the case, which is basically a slow, painful death for your watch.
The same goes for perfumes, lotions, and sunscreen. Your signature scent might be divine, but the chemicals in these products can damage leather straps and even wear down metal finishes over time. Apply your skincare first, let it dry, and only then put your watch on.
Finally, don’t forget the power of a quick wipe-down with a soft cloth. A gentle clean will remove dust, sweat, and that mysterious grime that appears after a long day.

Watches & sports

For intense workouts or outdoor adventures, skip the leather straps as they can wear down from sweat. If you are swimming or doing water sports, check your watch’s water resistance rating first. For contact sports, it is best to leave your watch at home to avoid damage from impacts. And for running or cycling, make sure your watch is comfortable and secure, so it doesn’t distract you mid-session.

Servicing & repairs

Even the most reliable watches need a little professional attention now and then. Regular servicing ensures your timepiece runs smoothly for years to come, and it is worth making it a part of your watch care routine.
Mechanical watches usually require servicing every 3–5 years. The inner workings need oiling to prevent wear and tear, and seals need checking to avoid water damage. If you notice your watch’s accuracy slipping or if it starts running too fast or slow, it might be time to send it in for a tune-up.
Quartz watches need less frequent servicing, but that doesn’t mean they are maintenance-free. The most common issue is a battery replacement, typically every 1–2 years. It is also a good idea to have the seals checked during a battery change to keep it water-resistant.
Apart from regular check-ups it is wise to keep an eye on your timepieces. If your watch is losing time, fogging up, or making unusual noises, it is time to visit a professional. Waiting too long could cause more damage and potentially reduce the lifespan of your watch.

Storage & handling

When you are not wearing your watch, make sure it is stored properly. The best way to do this is by keeping it in a watch box or case, which will protect your timepiece from dust, scratches, and other elements. It also helps maintain the shape of the strap or bracelet.
Be mindful of where you store your mechanical watch — avoid placing it near electronic devices or anything with a magnetic field, as magnets can interfere with the timekeeping.
If you have got more than one watch, it is a good idea to rotate between them. Wearing the same one every day can lead to faster wear, so giving each timepiece some time to rest can help preserve them for the long run.
