Bring Back Our 2014: Games We Used To Play (And You Still Can!)

19 Mar 2025

I have never been a gamer myself, but I have been playing some mobile games (and I still do, but that is a whole different story). Lately, I have been feeling nostalgic about it and actually found out that all these games are still there. Check out our favourites.

2048

Google Play | App Store
A game of numbers, logic, and endless frustration. The premise is simple: slide numbered tiles on a grid, merging matching ones to reach that elusive 2048 tile. The reality? You will convince yourself you have got the strategy down, only to find yourself completely stuck three moves later. A favourite of our publisher, Sofia Brontvein, who insists it is totally relaxing and satisfying.

Cut the Rope

Google Play | App Store
This little green creature, Om Nom, is arguably one of the most adorable mobile gaming mascots. The goal? Cut ropes strategically to feed him candy. The challenge? Physics, patience, and your ability to resist the urge to throw your phone when you miscalculate. The music is charming, the puzzles are clever, and it is a perfect balance between brain-teasing and relaxing.

Subway Surfers

Google Play | App Store
An infinite runner that defined a generation. You play as a graffiti artist evading an inspector and his dog, dashing through subway tracks, dodging trains, and collecting coins. It has made a huge comeback thanks to TikTok, where gameplay videos are paired with Reddit story voiceovers. If you are wondering why someone is discussing their worst date while a character surfs atop a moving train, this is the reason.

Candy Crush

Google Play | App Store
A match-three puzzle game that launched a thousand clones. It starts off innocent enough — just match the colourful sweets and clear the board. Then, suddenly, you are running out of moves, waiting for extra lives, and considering whether it is socially acceptable to spend actual money on virtual boosters. Beware: it is deceptively addictive, and two hours will disappear in the blink of an eye.

King of Opera

App Store
A chaotic multiplayer game where four players battle to keep their singer on stage. You and your friends take turns nudging (or shoving) each other out of the spotlight while an opera singer belts out a tune. It is the perfect combination of ridiculousness and strategy, best played with friends who will not hold grudges (or who at least forget quickly).

Doodle Jump

Google Play | App Store
An endless jumping game that still looks oddly stylish despite its simplicity. The little green alien bounces from platform to platform, avoiding black holes and monsters while climbing ever higher. It is easy to pick up and play but maddeningly difficult to master — which is probably why it is still a classic.

Fruit Ninja

Google Play | App Store
A game that lets you live out your dream of being a fruit-slicing ninja. Swipe to cut melons, pineapples, and apples mid-air — but whatever you do, avoid the bombs. The combination of fast reflexes and satisfying sound effects makes this one of the most fun (and surprisingly therapeutic) mobile games. Just don't get too confident, or you will be one misplaced slice away from disaster.
