Architecture Insights: SUPER LIMBO Transformates the Sharjah Mall

4 Feb 2024

A heated architectural project, the SUPER LIMBO, located within the partially constructed Sharjah Mall, functions as an installation at the Sharjah Architecture Triennial 2023.
Designed by Limbo Accra (Dominique Petit-Frère and Emil Grip) in collaboration with architect Anne-Lise and Super Yaya founder Rym Beydoun, this piece responds to the theme of this year’s triennial — “The Beauty of Impermanence: An Architecture of Adaptability”.

SUPER LIMBO examines the prevalence of unfinished structures spanning regions from West Africa to the Middle East, urging viewers to reimagine its potential.
Covering an extensive area of approximately 64,753 m2, Sharjah Mall is one of the Emirate's largest unfinished constructions. The creators aimed to reshape the narrative of the space, encouraging reflections on potential rather than shortcomings.
The pavilion is composed of intricately woven cotton fabric, produced in Pakistan by 20 female textile workers. It hangs amidst the vacant spaces of the incomplete structure, drawing attention to the contrast between the soft, delicate nature of the fabric and the rugged, monumental character of the unfinished structure. In this way, Limbo embraces its etymological essence, transforming into a tangible exploration of the transitional space and fostering the emergence of new relationships and applications within the remains of Sharjah Mall.
The installation will be accessible until March 2024, so seize the opportunity and head in that direction now (assuming you are not reading this on a Friday).
