Breathe Easy: Why You Should Clean Your Air Conditioner Regularly

24 Jun 2024

It is a fact: air conditioners are a real lifesaver for anyone dealing with the heat (or, on the flip side, freezing). But they can be both your best friend and your worst enemy. It is easy to catch a cold if you are not careful — and we have already covered how to avoid that. One of the key tips? Cleaning your air conditioner.
Your air conditioner isn’t just a box on the wall that blows cool or warm air whenever you want. It does that effortlessly, turning on and off with a button and switching modes as needed. But while it keeps you comfortable, it also requires some TLC — so don’t forget to keep it clean.
So why bother cleaning it? Is it just to prevent it from breaking down?
Well, yes, partly. A clean air conditioner lasts much longer.
But there is more to it. Dust and harmful microorganisms can build up on the filters and heat exchangers inside. If you don’t clean them, these germs start to multiply — the humid environment inside your AC is perfect for them. And if you leave them too long, mould and mildew can spread, which is really bad news.
Imagine this: every time your air conditioner runs, it could blow all that dust and bacteria throughout your home. And you are breathing that in. So, cleaning your air conditioner is essential to avoid getting sick (respiratory infections, allergies, and more).

How do you know when it is time to clean your AC?

Here are some clear signs:
— It is making weird noises.
— There is an unpleasant smell when it is running.
— The room isn’t cooling down as quickly as it used to.
— Your electricity bill has gone up.

How to clean it?

You can clean your air conditioner using a special cleaning agent, a soft cloth, and a vacuum cleaner. Before you start, make sure to unplug the unit (just in case you have forgotten about this rule) and read the manual, as there might be specific instructions for your model.
But honestly, it is always best to call in the pros. They know exactly what to do and will do a more thorough job.
You typically clean your air conditioner at least once a year, but in the UAE, it is best to do it more often. With the hot climate and frequent AC use, aim to clean it at least twice a year.
