Where To Find True British Cuisine In Dubai

1 Aug 2024

Having grown up in London, I have always associated grey, cold days with the comforting warmth of British comfort food. When the weather was dreary, nothing hit the spot quite like a hearty plate of traditional fare. Now, living in Dubai, I find myself missing those comforting dishes from time to time. Thankfully, Dubai’s vibrant dining scene offers a fantastic infusion of British cuisine, bringing classic dishes with a modern twist to the forefront.
When I am feeling a bit homesick or just craving a dish that truly hits the spot, these are the places I turn to in Dubai.

Dinner by Heston

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, and I was absolutely blown away by the historical depth of the experience. The restaurant feels like stepping into a gastronomic time machine. Chef Tom Allen, a key figure behind their innovative menu, explained their unique approach: “A lot of our work involves exploring historical archives to discover what people ate hundreds of years ago.” They collaborate with historians and delve into past centuries’ stories, then adapt these flavours for the modern palate. Their focus on seasonal, local produce from the Middle East ensures that their creations are historically inspired, sustainable and top-notch. Expect to try the Meat Fruit to Tipsy Cake, each dish masterfully blends tradition with modernity, offering a fresh and exciting dining experience.

The Croft

The menu includes classics like roast beef, piping hot pies and a delectable Sunday roast, all crafted with high-quality, locally sourced ingredients. The Croft’s relaxed yet sophisticated ambience makes it a great spot for both casual lunches and special dinners. The venue also features a well-curated selection of British beverages, complementing the food perfectly. Their dedication to quality and comfort ensures that every meal feels like a warm embrace from England.

The Duck Hook

Lunch at The Duck Hook is a leisurely affair that brings the best of British comfort food to Dubai. Nestled in the heart of Dubai Hills, the menu features traditional dishes like bangers and mash, classic fish and chips, and an overflowing roast — on the weekends — all served in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. There are plenty of roast dinners in Dubai, however, this is my go-to spot when I know I will get consistency. The Duck Hook’s rustic decor inside and the spacious outdoor terrace provide a cosy setting for enjoying a meal with friends or family.

Crafty Fox Gastropub & Sports Bar

Its stylish interior and elegant atmosphere create a refined setting for enjoying British classics like roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, along with indulgent desserts such as sticky toffee pudding. The name Foxglove is inspired by the native Arabian fox, which, like the restaurant, calls the oasis of Jumeirah Golf Estates home. Look out for these charming creatures on the fairways during your visit.
The menu features gastropub classics and hearty favourites like Traditional British Roast, Crafty Shepherd’s Pie, and The Beef & Guinness Pie. For a flavourful vegetarian option, the Spicy Vegetable Burger offers a curry-flavoured vegetable patty with cheese and fresh vegetables served in a potato bun. Save room for a memorable meal and a cold beverage on the terrace.

Dhow and Anchor

It is clear why it is considered an OG spot in Dubai’s British dining scene. Before the city saw a flood of roast dinners and pub-like venues, Dhow and Anchor was the go-to place for a hearty British meal and a cosy spot to gather. The menu is filled with comforting British classics, such as traditional Sunday roasts, fish and chips that you'll want to tell everyone about and hearty meat pies. I love the relaxed ambience, which makes it ideal for gatherings. With its friendly service and consistently high quality, Dhow and Anchor remains a favourite for experiencing British dishes in Dubai.
